Greer I LOVE that concept. I really like the idea of having SOSs for different positions so that we can learn in a cohort. Especially for the most time consuming positions: producing, stage managing, and directing in particular. If there were a weekly meeting with all producers (or stage managers, or directors) in a quarter, in which they discussed their progress and how to more effectively do their job, resources available to them, etc, I think that would justify creating a for-credit system, even just for a .5 credit. It could be led by people with more experience in those roles, taught a la Ten Minute Play SOS, with the class leaders selected a year in advance (perhaps by StuCo exec??). The idea of course needs a lot of work, but it's certainly interesting to consider!!

TRIGGER WARNINGS PLEASE YES!!!

Throwing harmful content at your audience for the sake of the "art" of the surprise is tremendously irresponsible. If not on the poster, warnings should at least be posted on doors into performance spaces and on programs.

For shows associated with boards, a member of the board could be specified with the job of maintaining such warnings so that it is consistently done.

We'd get some kind of credit, even partial, for working on student shows. Then we could take the time most of us spend on distros we don't care about and use it to actually fully realize our ideas. I'm saddened by processes where everyone starts with ideas they love, and ends feeling like they failed simply because they didn't have the time to execute them.

General Discussion / Re: Budgets & Funding
« Last post by samgarrott on April 26, 2014, 09:03:52 pm »
Some thoughts:

Collective bargaining is valuable. We do almost all of our fundraising for individual shows, or at most for boards as a whole. If we collaborate to request more university funding (ASG funding or otherwise), we have a stronger voice, especially if we can claim to represent a larger portion of the student body at once.

Also, I LOVE THE IDEA OF MORE CHEAPER SHOWS. I think the WAVE studio slot is one of the greatest things ever to have happened to StuCo. I think Sit & Spin's Fall Cahn is likely to also be lower budget, since a large part of the show will be engaging with an existing space. The more we can make use of our actor/director surplus without draining funds and overexerting our sparse designer population, the better!!

I think ideas that can fulfill this concept can look like the 10-minute play festival. A low tech performance that allows lots of actors and directors (and in that particular case, playwrights) to work without much tech is awesome!! We could use more staged readings. We could use more studio slots.

General Discussion / Re: The Culture of Casting/Petitioning

I wonder how we respond to the truth that people cast / select their friends for these positions. It is not unreasonable that people are excited about working with people that they know; it makes sense that people take their own relationships with potential cast/board members/directors/producers into account (not to do so would be foolish). But it does make it hard for people to break into the community.

We have some incredible actors and incredible people on this campus who are not theatre majors, or who are not "inner" members of the StuCo community. How do we work to encourage these people to continue trying to participate? If they are repeatedly not cast, not chosen for boards, not given producer slots (or at least not as often as a StuCo heavy theatre major) -- how can we continue to engage them in our community?

Are petitioning and casting very comparable? Seems like apples and oranges to me.

One thing that perplexes me is how big the advertising campaigns seem to be. Sometimes it seems incongruous to make such a big deal out of asking everyone possible to come petition when in the end only two to five people will get something out of it. I guess I can understand it if one sees petitioning as just getting to know someone, who could then be considered for other positions or jobs in the future, (in the same way that if you audition for one thing you may see it as auditioning for many things, in the future, from people who watch you audition.)

In the same vein, how many people are going to suddenly decide to petition to produce, (a big undertaking,) after seeing a Facebook status? I would argue that the only effective way to convince someone to petition to produce or direct, who wasn't already going to do it, is to ask them personally. Not to guarantee them a slot, but to let them know that they might be suited for the job and one would love him/her to be considered.

I think one of the big problems is that we just don't have enough space to store everything we use :-/
What if we all together rented a huge room and just stored everything together a la Wirtz?

but I agree, I think more designers should draw from the stocks that exist and we should working on building up what each board has in storage.

Designers, stage managers, directors, and producers would take more assistants. They would provide more opportunities for less experienced community members to learn in a safe space.

Less experienced community members would be more willing / excited to assist. They would be encouraged to learn from upperclassmen rather than learning while being responsible for an entire element of a process.

(Stuco would have fewer shows to make this more logical / feasible.)

I'd like to talk about increasing the efficiency of our soft good storage. Almost every show I have been a part of have thrown away some prop or costume (or even many props or costumes), and I feel like we could re-use a lot more soft goods than we do.
