General Discussion / Re: An Ideal Stuco

I openly admit to being so so focused on the garage. But. The garage!!!

I know some members of the design community have already been talking about how to improve use of the garage. I just want to put out there the fact that wave alone cannot maintain its garage without help from stuco. Help means anything from 1. using the garage respectfully and safely 2. offering ideas about how to make it run more smoothly 3. putting more emphasis on builds in general: using them to teach/learn.

I am not the most articulate, there is plenty I am missing, so I am simply asking for help from stuco with regards to making better use of our garage.

The garages need to be better valued and respected! As one of next year's PTDs for WAVE I really want to
1. enforce stricter policies for respectful use of the wave garage
2. ask for HELP from more tech-minded members of stuco in cleaning and organizing the garage
3. make the garage a place that is clean and accessible and so much more efficient

Jacob the issue with more environmentally friendly lights is they would hit the budgets pretty hard, and lights are already oftentimes a budget breaker. Which is where the idea of less tech heavy shows in a boards season could be helpful because then more resources can go towards making the few that are tech heavy even more spectacular.

I've been thinking about this for a while now and I have a bunch of thoughts that I might expand upon later, but things I just wanted to throw out quickly: shared lumber / storage, environmentally-friendly lights, capping paper publicity, etc.

I would love to see more collaboration between theatre and other departments. reaching out to the visual art majors and community on campus could be a really cool new spin on theatre performances and how we approach the spaces we use.

Storing everything in one large room, if the boards still keep individual ownership, would be inherently troublesome. So much coordination.

Could a larger STUCo umbrella organization help though? More communal resources -such as good softgoods- perhaps?

I love the idea of more lower tech shows, but it raises the question of what is stopping them from happening now? Do we think a board would not approve of a low tech show, or demand changes at design presentations if it's too minimal? Or, (more likely) do we need a culture shift where directors pursue simpler shows, and what director would be willing to sacrifice their show? If we can't make this a cultural shift - which will be hard - how would we fairly enforce such a show? I don't think adding more shows is the answer, as that would go against the idea of less stress on the people that make up STUCo

Less tech-heavy shows! Be creative, find a way to do it that takes less resources, less time, and less manpower.

As far as petitioning goes, I worry about the idea that positions that are petitioned for seem to go to people who are extroverted very often, especially considering the importance that the interview part holds. I don't really know how big of a problem this is as I've only sat on the board side of one full round of petitions, or what we can do to solve this if it is a significant problem, but it's just a thought I had.

SOSs for different positions would be SO useful, especially with mentoring from older students. That would also eliminate some of the wheel-reinventing that can go on with people new to a position, particularly directors and producers.

Also, possibly a long shot but mentoring from faculty within the seminars. Even minimally. Bridging professors/non-tenured faculty with the student theatre scene IMO would strengthen the department.
